Platform and Partnerships in Kenya

Members of the Upstate Institute for Global Health and Translational Science have more than 25 years combined experience in western Kenya with long-standing collaborations through the Department of Defense, United States Army Research Unit- Kenya and the Walter Reed Project.

Today, the Kenya program features an educational collaboration between Upstate and Maseno University School of Medicine through a Memorandum of Understanding and Hospital Letter of Agreement. These agreements will allow Upstate's clinical faculty to train and educate Kenyan medical students and trainees at Maseno University and Obama Children's Hospital in Kisumu, Kenya. Upstate students are able to shadow and round with Upstate faculty at these hospitals during a global health experience. The collaboration also features bi-lateral exchange where Upstate annually supports two Kenyan medical students from Maseno University to participate in a one month clinical observership at Upstate.

Platform and Partnerships in Ecuador

The Upstate Institute for Global Health and Translational Science has partnered with the Ecuador Centers for InterAmerican Studies (CEDEI) Medical Spanish Immersion program and Walking Palms Global Health in Ecuador. For students participating in the CEDEI program, once in country, students are based in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador where they are immersed in intensive medical Spanish language training while living with a local Ecuadorian homestay. Students experience the public health and medical system in Ecuador through visits to local hospitals, medical schools, rural health programs, and traditional healers. Walking Palms Global Health is an interdisciplinary global health organization that uses Systems Thinking to help communities build social resilience. Students working with Walking Palms are based in Baha de Carquez, Ecuador. During their time at the site, international site needs and student interests are brought together to produce a project that will benefit all parties involved.
